How to request your Italian contribution statement (Estratto Conto Contributivo)
Short answer
Log in to inps.it with SPID (the dominant option), CIE 3.0 (Carta d'Identità Elettronica, read via an NFC phone and the CieID app) or CNS (Carta Nazionale dei Servizi, a smart card plus reader). Once logged in, go to MyINPS → Fascicolo Previdenziale del Cittadino → Posizione assicurativa → Estratto conto contributivo and choose a period. There is no request-and-wait step: the statement is a document you view and download on the spot.
It is free. The document lists your recorded contribution periods (contributi) by year and by employer or fund, not a pension amount — for a forecast, INPS runs a separate tool called 'La mia pensione futura'. If you cannot get SPID, CIE or CNS from abroad, INPS still issues a phone-verified PIN, but only to citizens residing abroad who hold no Italian identity document at all; everyone else has to clear the digital-identity bar, or ask a patronato (INCA, ACLI, INAS and others) to pull the statement on their behalf under a mandate.

Below: all 5 steps, and what to do at each point where the login goes wrong — which is the part the official pages leave out.
Open inps.it ↗Before you start: do you have SPID, CIE or CNS?
INPS has no login of its own — every route into inps.it runs through one of Italy's three digital identities: SPID, CIE 3.0 or CNS. If you already hold one, skip to the next step. If you don't, this is the genuinely hard part of the whole process, and it is harder still if you live outside Italy.
SPID (Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale) is the dominant option and the one INPS itself points to first. It is issued by nine accredited private providers — Poste Italiane, Aruba, InfoCert, Namirial, Sielte, TIM, Lepida, In.Te.S.A. and Register — and is tied to Italian citizenship, not residence, so it can in principle be requested from anywhere. To get it you need a valid Italian ID document (passport, carta d'identità or patente), your codice fiscale, and an identity-verification step. From 2026 most private providers also charge an annual renewal fee of roughly €6, but citizens registered with AIRE (resident abroad) are explicitly exempt from that fee — Poste ID states this outright, and other providers follow the same carve-out.
CIE 3.0 (Carta d'Identità Elettronica) is Italy's electronic ID card. Logging in with it needs an NFC-capable smartphone, the free CieID app, and the card's 8-digit PIN (the first 4 digits are given when you apply, the second 4 when the card is delivered). The catch for anyone abroad: you have to physically hold the card, and getting one from outside Italy currently means an in-person appointment at your consulate (via the Prenot@Mi booking platform), because issuing a CIE requires biometric capture that can't be done remotely. From 1 June 2026, AIRE-registered citizens gained a second route — applying at any Italian comune instead of only the consulate — but physical presence somewhere is still required either way.
CNS (Carta Nazionale dei Servizi) is the least practical of the three for emigrants. In Italy it usually arrives bundled with your Tessera Sanitaria (health card) once you're enrolled in the national health service, and using it as a login credential needs a smart-card reader plus a PIN/PUK collected in person at a regional office. Unless you are already resident in Italy and enrolled in the SSN, this is not a realistic route from abroad.

If it doesn't look like this
I live abroad and don't have any valid Italian ID document — what now?
This is the one genuine lower-bar fallback, and it's worth knowing it exists precisely because it's obscure: since 1 October 2021, INPS issues its old-style phone PIN as a login credential exclusively to citizens residing abroad who hold no Italian identity document. Everyone else has been pushed off PIN and onto SPID/CIE/CNS. You request it online via INPS's PIN request form (or through the Contact Center Multicanale by phone), giving your personal details, an ID document reference, your address and contact details. The PIN is split and delivered in two halves — the first 8 characters to your email or mobile, the second 8 by post to your residential address — which means it is not instant, but it does not require an Italian passport, an Italian phone number, or a webcam. It unlocks read-only services including your contribution position.
I have a valid Italian passport or carta d'identità but live outside Italy — which SPID provider should I pick?
Look for providers marked with the EU or globe icon on the SPID provider-comparison page — that badge specifically means the provider offers identity recognition to people located outside Italy, usually via a live webcam call with an operator. Aruba, InfoCert, Namirial and Poste ID (PosteID) all offer this route; cost for the video-recognition step is typically €10-25 one-off, on top of any annual renewal fee most providers introduced in 2026 (waived for AIRE-registered residents abroad, minors, and citizens 75+). Recognition using an existing CNS or CIE, where available, is usually free.
Can my consulate help?
In two different ways, for two different documents. For SPID: Italian consulates host Registration Authority Officers (RAO) who can carry out in-person identity verification as an alternative to the webcam route — useful if the online recognition keeps failing. For CIE: the consulate is (until mid-2026, and still an option after) the only place an AIRE-registered citizen abroad can apply for or renew the physical card, via an appointment booked through Prenot@Mi; you must attend in person because CIE issuance requires biometric capture.
Can a patronato get my Estratto Conto Contributivo for me instead?
Yes, and this is genuinely the path of least resistance if SPID/CIE/CNS is proving impossible. Patronati — INCA-CGIL, ACLI, INAS-CISL, EPASA-ITACO and others — are free, INPS-recognised assistance bodies with their own telematic access to INPS systems. Give them a signed mandate (mandato di assistenza e rappresentanza) plus your ID and codice fiscale, and they pull the statement, and can help interpret it, at no cost. Several patronati operate specifically for Italians abroad and can be engaged remotely.
What is a codice fiscale and where do I find mine?
It's Italy's tax code, the identifier every INPS and Agenzia delle Entrate record hangs from — comparable in function to Ireland's PPS number. It's printed on your Tessera Sanitaria, on any Italian payslip, and on correspondence from INPS or the Agenzia delle Entrate. Italian citizens abroad registered with AIRE already have one; if you don't know yours, your consulate or the Agenzia delle Entrate can confirm it.
Go to inps.it and log in with SPID, CIE or CNS
Open inps.it and use the login control — labelled 'Accedi' — near the top of the page. You'll be offered the three credential types; choose whichever you hold. SPID and CIE hand you off to an external authentication screen (your identity provider, or the CieID app); CNS reads your smart card locally through your browser.

If it doesn't look like this
The login screen looks different depending on which credential I pick — is that normal?
Yes. SPID sends you briefly to your chosen provider's own domain (Poste ID, Aruba, InfoCert, etc.) to enter your SPID username and password plus a one-time code, then bounces you back to inps.it already authenticated. CIE opens (or prompts you to open) the CieID app to tap your card via NFC and enter its PIN. CNS talks to a smart-card reader plugged into your computer. All three land you in the same place afterwards: MyINPS.
Which credential are you using?
The exact screen you see next depends on which of the three you picked. All three routes rejoin at the same place — your MyINPS dashboard.
Enter your SPID username, password and one-time code
On your provider's login page, enter the SPID credentials you registered — usually an email-style username and a password — then supply the second factor: a code from your provider's app, or an SMS code, depending on how your account is set up.
If it doesn't look like this
I've forgotten my SPID password or lost the device for my one-time codes
Recovery is handled by your specific identity provider, not by INPS or by a central SPID authority — go to your provider's own site (Poste ID, Aruba, InfoCert, etc.) and use their account-recovery flow. If you're abroad and the recovery process wants an Italian phone number you no longer control, contact the provider's support directly; several offer alternate verification for AIRE-registered users.
Open CieID, tap your card and enter its PIN
On an NFC-capable smartphone with the CieID app installed, follow the prompt to bring your CIE close to the device, then enter the 8-digit PIN — the first 4 digits given when you applied, the second 4 given when the card was delivered.
If it doesn't look like this
My phone doesn't have NFC, or I'm on a desktop
You can still authenticate from a computer using a phone with NFC as the card reader, via the CieID app's desktop-pairing flow, or a dedicated USB CIE reader if you have one. There is no way to complete CIE login without tapping the physical card against something with NFC.
I've forgotten my CIE PIN
The PIN cannot be recovered remotely — it was issued in two halves specifically so no single party holds the whole thing. A forgotten or blocked PIN generally means a trip back to a comune (in Italy) or your consulate (abroad) to have it reset or the card reissued.
Insert your CNS smart card and enter its PIN
With a compatible smart-card reader connected and its drivers installed, insert your CNS (or Tessera Sanitaria acting as CNS) and enter the PIN issued when you activated the card at a regional office.
If it doesn't look like this
My browser doesn't detect the card reader
CNS login depends on middleware specific to your card issuer being installed and your reader meeting the PC/SC, ISO 7816-3 and CCID standards. This is a desktop-only, Italy-issued-hardware route, and troubleshooting it from abroad is one of the reasons CNS is the least practical of the three options for emigrants — SPID or CIE will generally get you there faster.
Open MyINPS and go to Fascicolo Previdenziale del Cittadino
Once authenticated you land in MyINPS, your INPS account area. Either search 'Fascicolo Previdenziale del Cittadino' in the portal's search bar, or navigate MyINPS → Il tuo Fascicolo. This is the personal folder that holds your contribution position, payment history, pending applications and personal data — the Estratto Conto Contributivo lives inside it.
Open Posizione assicurativa, then Estratto conto contributivo
Inside the Fascicolo, open the Posizione assicurativa (insurance position) section, then select Estratto conto contributivo. This is also where the correction tool, Segnalazione contributiva, lives if you find something wrong — covered in the outcome section below.
Choose a period and download the PDF
Select the period you want covered, then export the document. Multiple independent sources describe this as a straight PDF download available immediately — there is no submit-and-wait request queue, unlike Ireland's Contribution Statement.
One honest gap: no source consulted for this guide quoted the literal caption on the download button itself (as opposed to describing the action in prose), so it is not repeated here as a verified quote. Expect something to the effect of a PDF export or download control near the period selector.
What happens next
You already have the document — there is no waiting period. The Estratto Conto Contributivo lists your contribution periods (contributi) year by year, broken out by employer or fund, distinguishing paid (da lavoro), credited (figurativi), voluntary (volontari) and redeemed (da riscatto) contributions, organised under whichever pensionistic scheme applies to you (AGO/FPLD for private-sector employees, Gestione Separata, artigiani e commercianti, or the ex-INPDAP scheme for public employees).
What it deliberately does not show: a pension amount. INPS keeps that calculation in a separate tool, La mia pensione futura, which projects a future pension using your recorded history plus assumptions you set yourself — real salary growth (0-5%, default 1.5%), a chosen retirement age, and whether you're paying into supplementary pension funds. Treat the Estratto Conto Contributivo as the ledger and La mia pensione futura as the forecast built on top of it; conflating the two is the single most common misreading of this document.
If a period is missing or wrong — a job you know you worked, an employer who under-remitted — INPS has a formal correction path in the same place you found the statement: Fascicolo Previdenziale del Cittadino → Posizione assicurativa → Segnalazione contributiva. You specify the missing period, the pensionistic scheme involved, and the type of contribution missing, and attach evidence (payslips, payment receipts). The statutory processing deadline under Italian administrative law (L. 241/1990) is 30 days. You generally have 5 years to contest a missing contribution before it prescribes, and filing the segnalazione itself interrupts that clock — so a report you've submitted is safe even if INPS takes a while to process it.
For periods worked outside Italy: this Italian statement will not show foreign contributions on its own. Under EU Regulation 883/2004, insurance periods across member states can be aggregated so that periods too short to qualify anywhere alone can still produce an entitlement — but as with Ireland's PRSI record, you are not the courier. When you eventually claim an Italian pension, INPS requests your record from the other country's institution directly. What this Italian statement is for is confirming the Italian half is complete and correct before that claim goes in. If you specifically want to see foreign periods folded into an INPS-issued document ahead of a claim, ask for an estratto contributivo internazionale via a patronato or through MyINPS's international totalisation service, rather than expecting the standard Estratto Conto Contributivo to include them.

My record has gaps for years I know I worked in Italy
Not every gap is an error — periods outside the workforce legitimately show blank. But genuine omissions happen, especially around employer changes. Use Segnalazione contributiva (Fascicolo → Posizione assicurativa → Segnalazione contributiva), attach payslips or payment receipts, and expect a 30-day statutory turnaround. Filing it stops the 5-year prescription clock even if processing takes longer.
I also worked outside Italy — do those years count towards an Italian pension?
For qualifying purposes, generally yes, under EU Regulation 883/2004 (or bilateral agreements for non-EU countries Italy has arrangements with). Periods too short to qualify for a pension anywhere alone can be aggregated with periods elsewhere, each country then paying its own share. Overlapping periods count once, and there's a minimum Italian record — 52 weeks under the general totalisation rule — before anything can be aggregated onto it.
Do I need to send my Estratto Conto Contributivo to another country's pension authority myself?
No. Pension institutions exchange contribution records between themselves once you actually claim — you are not the courier. The Italian statement is for you: it's how you confirm the Italian side of the picture is complete and correct before you claim, since a dispute found mid-claim slows the pension down. If you specifically need a document showing periods from multiple countries combined ahead of a claim, that's the separate estratto contributivo internazionale, not this one.
Questions people actually ask
Is the INPS Estratto Conto Contributivo free?
Yes, consulting and downloading it through MyINPS costs nothing. What can cost money is getting the digital identity you need to log in — SPID's webcam identity-verification step typically runs €10-25 one-off with providers that support recognition from abroad, and most private SPID providers introduced a roughly €6/year renewal fee from 2026, though AIRE-registered citizens abroad, minors and citizens 75+ are exempt from that fee.
How long does it take to get my Estratto Conto Contributivo?
Once you're logged in, multiple independent sources describe it as an immediate PDF download with no submit-and-wait step, unlike Ireland's Contribution Statement, which arrives later as a notification. The slow part of this whole process is not the statement — it's obtaining SPID, CIE or CNS in the first place if you don't already have one, which for someone abroad can take anywhere from same-day (webcam SPID recognition) to several weeks (a consulate CIE appointment via Prenot@Mi).
What's the easiest login option for an Italian citizen living abroad?
SPID, and specifically a provider whose recognition page carries the EU or globe badge, meaning they verify identity by webcam for people outside Italy — Aruba, InfoCert, Namirial and Poste ID all offer this. You need a valid Italian ID document (passport, carta d'identità or patente) and your codice fiscale. CIE requires physically holding the card, which for AIRE-registered emigrants currently means an in-person consulate appointment (or, from June 2026, an Italian comune) — a materially higher bar than a webcam call. CNS is the least practical of the three from abroad, since it depends on Italy-issued hardware and drivers.
I have no valid Italian ID document and I'm stuck outside Italy — is there any way in?
Yes, and it's the fact most guides to this process miss: since 1 October 2021, INPS still issues an old-style phone PIN, but only to citizens residing abroad who hold no Italian identity document. You request it online or via the Contact Center Multicanale, giving your personal details, an ID reference and your address; the PIN arrives in two halves, one to your email or mobile, one by post to your residential address, so it's slower than SPID but does not require Italian ID, an Italian phone number, or a webcam. Alternatively, a patronato (INCA, ACLI, INAS, EPASA-ITACO and others) can pull the statement on your behalf for free, under a signed mandate.
Can a patronato request my Estratto Conto Contributivo for me?
Yes, at no cost. Patronati have their own telematic access to INPS systems and can retrieve the statement, and help you read it, once you give them a signed mandato di assistenza e rappresentanza plus your ID and codice fiscale. This is the practical fallback if SPID, CIE and CNS are all closed to you.
What exactly does the Estratto Conto Contributivo show?
Your recorded contribution periods, organised by year and by employer or fund, distinguishing contributions that were paid (da lavoro), credited (figurativi, e.g. for illness or military service), voluntary (volontari) or redeemed (da riscatto), under whichever pensionistic scheme applies to you. It does not include a pension amount or forecast.
Does the Estratto Conto Contributivo tell me what my Italian pension will be?
No. That's a separate INPS tool, La mia pensione futura, which projects a pension using your recorded contribution history plus assumptions you choose yourself (expected salary growth, a target retirement age, whether you contribute to a supplementary pension fund). Use the Estratto Conto Contributivo to check the record is correct, and La mia pensione futura for a forecast built on top of it.
How many years of contributions do I need for an Italian pension?
For 2026, pensione di vecchiaia (old-age pension) generally requires 67 years of age and a minimum 20 years of contributions. Workers entirely under the contributivo system (first contribution from 1 January 1996 onward) have an alternative route at 71 with just 5 years of effective contribution, or can also use the 67/20 route if the resulting pension meets a minimum-amount threshold. The retirement age is scheduled to rise to 67 years 1 month in 2027 and 67 years 3 months in 2028. Treat these as orientation and confirm against INPS or a patronato before relying on them.
Why is a period I worked outside Italy missing from my Estratto Conto Contributivo?
Because the standard statement only covers contributions registered with INPS itself — periods paid into another country's system don't appear on it automatically. Under EU Regulation 883/2004 (or Italy's bilateral agreements with some non-EU countries) those periods can still be aggregated to determine pension entitlement, but the aggregation happens when you claim, handled institution-to-institution, not by editing this document. If you want a document that shows combined periods ahead of a claim, ask for an estratto contributivo internazionale.
Do I need to send my Estratto Conto Contributivo to another country's pension authority?
No. For state pensions, institutions request records from each other directly once you claim — there's no claimant-carried form for this purpose. Your Estratto Conto Contributivo is for you: it lets you confirm the Italian side of your record is complete and correct before you claim, because errors discovered mid-claim cause delays.
My record has a gap or an error — how do I fix it?
Use Segnalazione contributiva, reached from Fascicolo Previdenziale del Cittadino → Posizione assicurativa → Segnalazione contributiva. Specify the missing period, the pensionistic scheme involved, and the type of contribution, and attach supporting evidence such as payslips or payment receipts. The statutory processing deadline is 30 days under Italian administrative law, and you generally have 5 years to contest a missing contribution before it prescribes — submitting the segnalazione stops that clock.
